Opening Your Day Spa Business
If you are planning to open your own day spa business there are plenty of rules and regulations that are going to nag you right from the start. The more of them you are familiar with the less frustrating things wills be. Thankfully from state to state or province to province overall they remain relatively consistent. It’s also important that you know who your market is.
The day spa business arena may be more flexible and open ended than you’ve realized. There are all kinds of unique opportunities when it comes to spas. You might decide to open a mobile spa, a luxury spa, a full service spa, or just a mini spa. Regulations can vary from spa type to the next.
Your business plan is where it all begins. This is where you are going to lay things out. It’s where you define your business structure, what services you’ll offer, staff you’ll hire, where you’ll be located, and so much more. It’s the most important document to every business.
Starting a day spa business won’t be cheap. You’ll need quite the working capital to get your project off the ground, which means you need to know how you plan to raise that working capital. For example will you be heading to the bank or will you be looking for venture capital? Without solid startup funds as well as funding for operations you will go under.
Next you’ll need to decide what your operational hours will be, what services you are planning to offer, what equipment you will need, how you will lay out your spa space, which suppliers you will use to order your product and equipment from.
How do you decide what services you will offer? This is a significant part of your success or failure so it can also be a stressful time. When considering the services you plan to offer consider the professional staff you will need for each of these services and whether you actually have the space for all of the services you would like to offer.
We hear it all the time – location – location – location, and it truly is the basis of success or failure. A common mistake is to choose a location that’s off the beaten track and away from foot traffic because the cost is so much less. They assume that clients can be drawn to their cheaper location when this simply is not true. You would be much better off putting the extra money into a lease in a location that is easy to find, easy to access, and has plenty of foot traffic.
Opening your day spa business is going to be an exciting time, but you want to make sure you are doing things right so that you are successful!
